On earlier versions of OS X, Apple allowed you to use your Apple ID password as an option to unlock your Mac, which automatically changed whenever you changed your Apple ID password. . That said, you don’t need to use your Apple ID password to unlock your Mac. This is not a good idea.

This is why sometimes it is a good idea to change your Mac’s login password: it ensures that if someone has accessed your Mac in the past, they cannot continue. To access it, neither to anyone else. How to change Mac login password

  1. Click on the Apple icon in the top left corner of the screen.
  2. Choose System Preferences from the drop-down menu.
  3. Click on Users and Groups.
  4. Click on the Password tab.
  5. Click on the lock in the lower-left corner of the Users and Groups window.
  6. Enter your administrator password. (If you have never defined any, you can leave it blank and press OK.)
  7. Click unlock.
  8. Click Change Password.
  9. Enter your current Mac login password.
  10. Enter a new password.
  11. Enter the new password again to verify it.
  12. Enter a prompt that will help you remember your password if you forget it in the future.
  13. Click Change Password.
  14. Click lock to prevent further changes.

Your new password will be updated automatically. The next time you sign out of your Mac, you will need to enter a new password.
